FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is the organization created by inventor Dean Kamen with Woodie Flowers that oversees the robotics league Team 527 participates in. It was established to promote STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in a way that would stimulate high school students.
There are multiple divisions in FIRST, including the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), the FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST Junior Lego League (FLL Jr.), and the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) . The Red Dragons are an active FRC Team, competing in the annual game along with over 2,000 other teams from all across the United States, Brazil, England, Israel, and many other nations.
FIRST has received international recognition, receiving donations from NASA, Time-Warner, Google, BAE Systems, DARPA, and many more companies and organizations on the front lines of technological research and development. Teams that have won the national have been invited to the White House to demonstrate their robot to the President and the staff.
2011 marked the 20th year of the FRC games, which started in 1991 and have changed quite rapidly with the availability of new technology.
